The function of the oil pan.

The Oil Pan (also known as the oil pan or oil pan) is an important component of the engine lubrication system, and its main functions are as follows:

Store engine oil
As a "container" for engine oil, it stores lubricating oil to ensure that the oil pump can continuously extract oil for lubrication when the engine is running.

The capacity of the oil pan should meet the oil circulation requirements of the engine under different working conditions.

2. Auxiliary engine oil cooling
The oil pan made of metal (especially aluminum alloy) can help lower the oil temperature through its own heat dissipation.

The oil pan of some high-performance engines is also designed with heat dissipation fins or an integrated structure with the cooling system.

3. Sediment impurities
Metal debris, carbon deposits and other impurities carried in the engine oil circulation will settle at the bottom of the oil pan due to gravity, preventing them from re-entering the lubrication system.

The bottom of the oil pan is usually designed to be concave or with a magnet to adsorb sediment.

4. Install the oil pump and suction pipe
The suction pipe (suction pan) of the oil pump is fixed inside the oil pan to ensure that the engine oil is extracted efficiently.

The suction pipe is usually equipped with a filter screen to prevent large particle impurities from entering the lubrication system.

5. Seal the crankcase
It combines with the lower part of the engine block to form a sealed crankcase space, preventing oil leakage and the entry of external contaminants.

6. Other functions
Structural support: The oil pan design of some engines can enhance the rigidity of the cylinder block.

Oil deflector: Prevents the oil level from shaking during intense driving, ensuring stable oil suction by the oil pump (commonly found in racing cars or high-performance engines).

Precautions
Material: Mostly steel plate stamping or aluminum alloy casting. The latter has better heat dissipation but is more expensive.

Maintenance: When changing the engine oil regularly, clean the oil pan and check for any deformation or leakage.

Design difference: Dry oil pan (for high-performance vehicles) stores engine oil in an independent oil tank, with the oil pan merely serving as a collector.

Although the oil pan has a simple structure, it is crucial for the lubrication, heat dissipation and service life of the engine.
